The Beauty of Time (and 3 Tips to Maximize It)

Jord Wood Watch

“Remember that money can come as quickly as it goes, but time, once it is gone, never comes back.”
–Damon Brown

It’s not just me, right? As you get older time just seems to freaking fly. A really cool article popped up in my news-feed recently and it makes perfect sense. Get this: “the longer you’re alive, the smaller a year becomes in relation to your entire life as a whole. For example, when you’re five, a year is 20% of your entire life. When you’re 50, however, a year is only 2% of your life.” What the what? Depressing, a little. Make the most of it? Let’s give it a go!

I’m a work-from-home mom with my own business. I get a few hours to work in silence each week but otherwise, emails and inquires and design happens between my daughter’s naps, short bursts of solo play and cartoons. If I don’t make the most of time, I’m out of luck. Over the last year, I’ve nailed down a few practices that are lifesavers for maximizing the minutes I’ve got…

  1. Have a Priority Purpose.
Every night before bed, I sit down with a cup of tea, review the day’s accomplishments and start a new list for tomorrow. Syke! I wish… It’s never as relaxing as that but I do try to do it at some point daily. Having my priorities set for the next day works wonders for keeping me on track. Nail down the top few things that absolutely must-get-done and Sharpie them in to your most productive time. (For me, that’s first thing in the morning.)
  2. Keep it Separate, Simple, and Specific.
I love lists, I just do. I’m never gonna give them up and I’d never tell you too either.  But while they’re helpful at times, other days, they’re just serving as an illusion of productivity. The best method I’ve found? Google Keep. I probably have 100 different lists but they’re searchable so who cares if they’re a little unorganized?! Plus, you can color code, add pretty header images, and wiggle them around to your hearts content. I can edit on my desktop, from my phone when we’re on the go, even offline. It’s a beautiful thing people. The trick is, keeping the daily Priority Purpose list front and center and setting up reminder notifications for it if needed. Be as specific as possible with this list, so you have an actual gauge of how much time a task will really take. For example, I used to write, “Post new products to my website.” when in reality before that would even be possible there are a handful of tasks that have to be completed prior so now my list looks more like, “photograph new bags”, “edit photos of new bags”, “create product listing copy”, and “upload copy and images to product listings”. See what I’m saying?
  3. The Five Minute Rule.
Being self motivated is hard. At least for me. If you, too – try the 5 minute rule a few times per day. Example, when Evelina unexpectedly sits still to read on her own for a few minutes, I’m all like, “OMG what can I get done in the next few??) Edit a few photo’s for future Instagram posts? Reply to some comments? Do a little research on something for my website? Squeezing in a few of these sessions per day might seem small but makes a big difference, I promise!

Alas, as focused and well planned as we are, the clock is going to keep on ticking so we might as well watch it wind down in style, right? (Obviously this was going to take a turn into fashion somehow, you probably knew that though, it is me…)

Jord Wood Watch

When I unboxed this wooden women’s watch from Jord all my color lover dreams came true. No detail has been overlooked, from the complimentary wood packaging, to the zebra wood strap, sapphire crystal glass, and Swarovski crystal dial accents.

When it comes to watches, I’m more of the fashion over function type, and though this one definitely has the function down (it’s self winding, which is just so cool) the style statement is what really blows me away. I chose this exquisite turquoise version, and the selection ranges from understated elegance to fashionably forward, and they’re each uniquely unforgettable.

Introducing, Fosterie

coming soon*butterflies in my belly*

I’m very excited (and a little nervous!) to let you in on a little news…

But first, a story.

Travel has always been an important part of my career and my personal life. It’s an eye opener and that’s one of the reasons I enjoy it so much – different cultures, different surroundings, different struggles.  It brings awareness to what’s really important like nothing else can.  From hungry children in Cambodia and Nicaragua, lack of maternal and infant care, to the lasting effects of natural disasters, the scenes are sometimes hard to stomach.

On the other hand, we get to see beautiful places, meet wonderful people, and my personal favorite, a first hand look at local artisans and their stunning handmade products.

Motivated to combine my experience in retail buying and passion for travel with a greater purpose, the idea for Fosterie was born. To “foster” means to encourage or promote development and I’d like to do just that.

lifeofuseMy goal was to partner with a philanthropic institution as a recipient to a portion of proceeds but I struggled to narrow it down. There are so many causes I’m passionate about, how could I choose just one?

Thankfully, serendipity took over and I was lead to Heart to Heart International, an organization that strengthens communities through improving health access, providing humanitarian development and crisis relief worldwide. From disaster response and community support, to children’s health and medical labs, they go where the needs are domestically and internationally, providing Care Kits, volunteers, and supplies and I am absolutely thrilled to have partnered with them. (They’re narrowing it down for me!) And most of all, I’m elated to announce that for each item purchased from Fosterie, 10% will be donated to Heart to Heart International.

For now, I’m beginning with a small collection of bracelets, inspired by my first souvenir living abroad. My hope is to further expand very soon, adding more jewelry styles, as well as unique, handmade accessories from around the world.

The shop will officially open this Friday, November 28th. There’s a line up of holiday sales on the roster (as well as a few giveaways!), free shipping (every day, yay!), and lots of love coming your way so please give it a like on Facebook and a follow on Instagram for the latest scoop (and a few sneak peeks in the meantime). And please, spread the word!

On Thanksgiving Eve, I’m filled with gratitude for this opportunity and am so thankful for your support as friends and readers. I truly hope you enjoy these items as much as I do.

Inspired by the places where we’ve left our hearts, making a mark in the hearts of others.Launch

P.S. The blog isn’t going anywhere, it’s here to stay! :)

Jaws Inspired

Did anyone watch Chime for Change on Sunday? (What an amazing event!) I was drawn to Jada’s shark tooth necklace.  Honestly, I haven’t given shark’s tooth jewelry a thought since leather ankle bracelets from a souvenir shop at any beach sometime around 14 years ago. But I’m digging the grown up necklace versions and covet all of the above. The earrings are pretty rad, too. And you know how I feel about dainty earrings with attitude.

P.S. One made with a real tooth, a fabulous bracelet, and a super cool cuff.

This bag is happiness.

I’ve never (honestly, never) been compelled to run out a purchase something at first sight. I usually research (is there a better deal) and debate over it (do I really need it?) (also known as, take all the fun out of it) and ultimately forget. But when my eye spotted this bag, there was no going back. It was love. And the thought that instantly popped in my mind was “this bag is happiness.” It’s simply a must. have.

(I know this post might sound a little shallow… I don’t truly believe material things are the real source of happiness. But it is super fun and in my favorite color. A little surface happiness can’t hurt in moderation.)

P.S. More love for yellow.

Super Cute Hats & Such

 1 / 2 / 3 / 4

Tonight I’m attending an event at Goorin Bros. Hatmakers in Chicago. Hubby and I are both big fans of the brand as you can always count on finding classic pieces with a hint of trend or splash of excitement. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t much of a hat person before stumbling into a Goorin store a few years ago. They all just seemed wrong on my head. What I learned – it’s less about style, more about fit. (Turns out, heads are not one size fits all, imagine!) Once you nail that down, it’s much easier to find a flattering design. Hubby looks super cute in this onethis is one of my fave’s (minus the turq ribbon – mine’s brown) and sometime’s they’re even fun with party dresses! I hadn’t perused the Goorin site in a while and am delighted at the additions of facinators and headpieces, they’re totally dreamy!

Are you a hat person? I don’t know if it counts but I can’t get enough of beret’s like this in the winter time.

JewelMint

You guys have heard of JewelMint right? The subscription jewelry line that offers new pieces of jewelry every month for $29.99 per piece? Before I go further, hang in there, this might get wordy but it’ll be worth it…
(If you’re really pressed for time skip down to the bullet points for the cliff notes version, I’ve got your back busy ladies. But otherwise, I hope you’ll settle in for a minute.)

It’s easy to fall into the trap of cheap accessories. And while cheap pieces aren’t bad, they’re often exactly that. Fading, breaking, lost stones, etc. “Ah, I’ll just toss it.” we say. But as I’m declaring this my year of the ‘cleanse’ I’m trying hard to rid myself and my home of junk. I’ve been debating over ordering from JewelMint for a while now – one, because when I normally pay ‘the cost of lunch’ for a new necklace or bracelet, $29.99 seemed pricey. And two, because I wasn’t sure the quality would be worth it. (Another celebrity’s name attached to a less than stellar product…) (This line is designed by actress Kate Bosworth and stylist Cher Coulter.)

But, I received my first JewelMint order over the weekend and was more than pleasantly surprised. I say pleasantly surprised because I consider myself pretty critical of products in general. After all, I get paid (in my full time job) to figuratively pick apart apparel products and analyze the details to negotiate for the best cost, quality, etc. So you can see why I might be a picky consumer. However, after my first experience with JewelMint I have nothing but great things to say. Starting from viewing the individual video’s per piece (more on that below) things felt right. Then the package arrived – black and sleek and mysterious. I opened the box revealing my first awesome piece and was thrilled with the weight, sturdiness, security of clasps and overall quality. More than anything, it’s so easy. I do love shopping but I rarely make enough time to do it properly. It’s so nice (and thrilling) to be able to have a new showroom emailed to me each month and make a selection from high quality, on trend pieces. In fact, my favorite realization was that each piece has qualities making it unique and special, yet feel like something you’ve had for ages.

Here’s the quick and dirty scoop on JewelMint:

  • It’s a ‘jewelry of the month club’ subscription service offering new pieces each month at only $29.99 per glorious piece. Yup. Pretty amazeballs.
  • You can skip a month if you want (though I highly doubt you will.)
  • The designs run the gamut, there is truly something for everyone.
  • Shipping is free! I don’t know about you but nothing makes me happier than getting to checkout and finding out I don’t have to pay for shipping. *happy dance*!
  • You don’t have to fight stores, research trends or even put forth much effort. Each month, just pick a fabulous piece from your personalized showroom.
  • In addition to the monthly video to excite you, each piece features an individual video telling you about the design inspiration, how to wear it and other fun facts. This little discovery put me over the edge. I think I’ve watched each one in my showroom at least 3 times. So much thought and detail over each piece, don’t you love it?!  It’s so helpful in getting a feel for scale and how it looks on.

Speaking of how it looks on,  peep the Love Spell Pendant in action!

Sweater – Kenji  //  Necklace – Love Spell Pendant  //  Leggings – UK Style by French Connection (similar)  Clutch – Asos  //  Orange Ring – H&M  //  Boots – Dolce Vita  //  Mani – ‘Love Letters’ Real Polish Strips

Curious yet? Check out the February video. Can you spot my manicure inspiration?

So guess what? JewelMint is being so kind and offering 50% off your first purchase when you use the code: BIG. Oh, snap! That translates to $14.99 a piece. This is major folks. Use this code and make it work! Offer is valid until 2/29/12 (First time users only.) Grab the code and go!
I wanna know… have you ordered from JewelMint? What was your experience like? Please do share!
Disclosure: I received product in return for this post, however, my opinions are my own, based on my experience and interaction with the brand. As always, if I don’t love it, I don’t tell you about it. Read my official (i.e. “wordy”) disclosure here.

P.S. Thank you soooo much to everyone that voted in the H.Bloom ‘Give Love That Lasts’ contest…
WE WON the grand prize for Chicago! And it still hasn’t sunk in yet :) (More deets here) Mwah!
